Programs: Leadership Training Academy
Seeking Applications for the Class of 2010
Purpose
The Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health Leadership Training Academy prepares physicians to become lifelong leaders in reproductive health advocacy. Through an eight-month, intensive program, the Academy helps its Fellows develop and internalize the skills and attributes they need to be powerful, effective advocates for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.
The next class of the Leadership Training Academy will start on September 12, 2009, and end on April 23, 2010.
Academy Highlights
Firsthand advocacy experience- Visits with lawmakers in state capitals and Washington, DC
- In-person and distance-learning classes
- Opportunities to improve medical education and share best practices in reproductive health care with peers
- On-camera media trainings
- Chances to educate the public about contraception, abortion, STDs, and other aspects of sexual and reproductive health
- Collaboration with physicians around the country and across specialties
- Opportunities to build and strengthen coalitions between organizations
- Guidance from experts in medicine, leadership, and advocacy
Who Can Apply
The Leadership Training Academy is open to:
- Physicians entering the second year of a Fellowship in Family Planning and those in their first year if they already have an MPH degree and prior approval from their direct supervisor. The Leadership Training Academy program, including travel and lodging expenses, is available at no cost to Family Planning Fellows through funds from a categorical grant.
- Practicing physicians or participants in fellowships other than Family Planning who are able to cover their own travel, room, and board; the grant does not cover these expenses for this group of physicians. For information about the travel involved, read the application form below. Note: The Academy has one full scholarship to cover the expenses of an applicant who is not a Family Planning Fellow; to apply for this scholarship, fill out the appropriate part of the application form below.
In addition to meeting the requirements above, applicants should have already demonstrated great potential as leaders and worked to improve reproductive health care. Further, applicants should be ready, willing, and able to be confident, visible, and tenacious ambassadors for reproductive health.
Space in the Leadership Training Academy is limited.

To be considered as a candidate for acceptance in the Leadership Training Academy, you must submit:
- Three letters of reference
- Your curriculum vitae
- The Leadership Training Academy Application

Deadline: All application material must be sent to the Academy via email only. The email must arrive on or before July 13, 2009. Email applications to Vanessa@prch.org.
Note: Please disregard the June 22 deadline listed on the application form. The deadline has been extended to July 13. Applicants will be notified via email by July 31 about the status of their application.
Mission
Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health founded the Leadership Training Academy to foster future generations of dedicated doctor-activist-leaders who will work throughout their careers to defend and advance comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.
History
PRCH has been helping doctors become physician-advocates since its inception in 1992. Formalized in 2003, our leadership training program has graduated five classes of doctor-activists. Our alumni have used their PRCH skills to make change in their home institutions and beyond.
