Doctors React to Guilty Verdict in Murder of George Tiller, MD
New York, NY—Today, a jury found Scott Roeder guilty of the murder of George Tiller, MD. Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health released the following statement from board chair Suzanne Poppema, MD, in response to the verdict:
“I am relieved that a jury in Kansas found Scott Roeder guilty of murdering Dr. George Tiller last May. The speed and unanimity of the jury’s decision underscores the simple facts of this case: George Tiller was murdered because he provided a legal, medically necessary service. I hope this trial will deter other extremists by reminding them that abortion is legal in America. Terrorism and murder are not.
“George Tiller was a dear friend and colleague. Nearly eight months after his death, I still recall his kindness, his compassion, and his motto: trust women. George trusted women to know what was right for their health and their families.
“No one can replace George Tiller, but his work goes on. He inspired countless other physicians to take up the mantle of abortion provision. Together, we will continue George’s legacy of trusting women and offering them expert, compassionate care.”
Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health recently released videos of a 2001 interview with Dr. Tiller about his decision to provide abortions.

“I believe women shouldn’t have to explain to governments, religious groups, or the patriarchy at large that they’ve made a decision to deal with the condition of their own bodies.”
